This compilation project took me almost two years to put together!
First, I had to listen to over 700 classical music pieces to sort out which ones would be fit for the mix. FYI, the music comes from a 78-CD Album pack called “Au Coeur du Classique“. It’s very rare and almost impossible to get so if you ever lucky enough to stumble upon the giant collection, buy it without hesitation as it’s a true Classic Music must have. Even if you could not be bothered with this amazing music, the collection is worth money so invest!
Second: I had to rip the music from CD to high-quality Mp3 format. That took me one year. As a busy person, I could not just sit down and do it in one sitting. In July 2011, I had to redo 6 months of the work I had done as someone broke into my flat and stole my MacBook Pro and two Lacie back-up hard drives
I could have delegated this seemingly mundane task to a kid student but you have to understand that for high-quality import, special settings need to be applied and I am too much of a control freak to trust anyone to do this better than me!
Third: I had to spend two weeks or so putting the songs that would make the compilation in the order that seemed right to create the musical journey that I wanted to take the listener on. The selection is a pain. How do you choose from 700 brilliant pieces of music only less than 70 to fit on one mix?
Fourth: I had to re-dit the tracks to make sure that the had the same volume. That took a few months.
Fifth: I had to record the six hour mix. On this one, I actually “cheated”. If you’re curious, ask in the comments below and I will spill the beans
Sixth: I had to listen to the mix to make sure that it was the way I wanted it to be. It took me 5 days as I would listen to an hour a day. Additionally, I had to edit the final mix to make sure the audio levels were the same. That took me quite a bit and my laptop crashed a few times as the processing was too intense!
Seventh: I had to create the video for YouTube. That was actually easy but it took the computer 10 hours to create the high-resoultion file from iMovie.
Eighth: I had to upload it to YouTube. This was easy too. I clicked the upload button and went to sleep. In the morning, 6 hours later, it was ready.
Ninth: I shared the link on the morning of January 1st 2012 when the upload was complete to the world as my new year gift.
Tenth: I watched in amazement as this mix took a life of its own and spread like wildfire all over the world. At this time of writing, it has been watched in EVERY single country in the world that has no Internet restrictions!
There you have it, if you really wanted to know! If you’re an astute listener you’ll notice that the first piece is not even a piano but a violin! I could not find a better beginning to this marathon mix so violin it was…
